Chinese President Xi shows willingness to expand BRICS NHK

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed eagerness to expand the BRICS five-nation group.

A summit of the bloc has been underway in Johannesburg, South Africa, since Tuesday. BRICS consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The countries' leaders are meeting on Wednesday, with Russian President Vladimir Putin joining online.

Expanding the group is a major issue for the gathering.

China's Xi sent a message to a business forum on Tuesday saying China will deepen collaboration with emerging countries and actively promote expansion of the group to realize a fairer international order.

China and Russia aim to strengthen BRICS to counter the West.

More than 20 countries, including Iran, Saudi Arabia and Argentina, have expressed desire to join the group. But there are reportedly differences among the BRICS countries over conditions for new members.
