Vietnam, fresh from G7 summit, welcomes former Russian leader NHK

Vietnam is welcoming a former Russian president for a visit. It comes soon after the country's prime minister attended part of the Group of Seven summit. Moscow slammed statements that came out of the gathering, calling them "anti-Russia."

Dmitry Medvedev now serves as vice chair of his country's Security Council and also as the leader of the ruling United Russia party. He held talks on Monday with supreme leader Nguyen Phu Trong, the head of Vietnam's Communist Party.

They reportedly confirmed that the two countries will continue to promote their traditional friendly relations and comprehensive strategic partnership.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visited Japan over the weekend for a G7 summit outreach meeting. He also had separate talks with G7 leaders as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Chinh reportedly told Zelenskyy that any conflict should be settled by peaceful means and Vietnam is ready to support those kind of efforts.

Vietnam has been trying to balance good relations with Russia along with Japan, the US, and others.
