Blinken arrives in Israel to push for Gaza ceasefire talks NHK

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Israel on Tuesday in an attempt to make another push for ceasefire talks on Gaza.

Blinken is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials.

The US government is likely to step up efforts to promote negotiations for a ceasefire and the release of hostages held by the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas.

The US is once again trying to persuade Israel to hold a truce on Gaza, after the Israeli military killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar last week.

But, neither Israel nor Hamas have so far shown signs of moving towards a ceasefire.

Israeli forces conducted fierce air and ground attacks in southern Lebanon on Monday through Tuesday, while they also continued their offensives in northern Gaza.

The Israeli military said they have killed dozens of combatants of the Lebanese Shia Muslim group Hezbollah, and destroyed armories in their operations.

Hezbollah for its part said it carried out rocket attacks against military targets in Haifa, northern Israel, as well as in the country's largest business city of Tel Aviv. Israeli media reported that one person was injured in an attack.

In Gaza, Palestinian media said on Tuesday that 15 people, including women and children, were killed in an Israeli drone attack in a northern area of the enclave.
