Body found off central Japan identified as girl missing in recent record rain NHK

Japan Coast Guard officials say a body found off the coast of central Japan is that of 14-year-old Kiso Hanon, who went missing during the recent torrential rains in Ishikawa Prefecture.

The officials based the confirmation on DNA tests and other methods.

The girl's body was found on Monday off the coast of neighboring Fukui Prefecture on the Sea of Japan. She was wearing clothes with the name "Kiso."

The junior high school student from Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture had been missing since the record rainfall on September 21. Police and firefighters had searched areas around a nearby river and elsewhere.

Ishikawa Prefecture and police say the death toll from the record heavy rain now stands at 14.
