Artillery strike hits Myanmar displaced persons camp NHK

An artillery strike hit a displaced persons camp in Myanmar, killing at least 29 people including 11 children. Fifty-seven people were reportedly injured. The United Nations condemned the attack that targeted civilians.

Forces of the region's ethnic minority told NHK that the shelling took place late Monday night in the northern state of Kachin.

A Myanmar military spokesperson denied its involvement in Monday's deadly shelling.

A woman who is involved in humanitarian work near the site told NHK that they are struggling with various shortages, such as medicine and food. She also said hospital beds are extremely limited.

The UN in Myanmar says it is deeply concerned about the reports of civilian deaths, as "camps are places of refuge, and civilians, no matter where they are, should never be a target."

Myanmar's military has continued its indiscriminate air strikes on citizens.
According to a local human rights group more than 4,000 civilians have been killed since the coup two years ago.
