Japanese government officials will meet on home soil after a second round of trade talks in the United States. They are trying to broker a deal in light of President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs. Chief tariffs negotiator Akazawa Ryosei is scheduled to arrive back in Japan on Saturday. He is expected to provide a detailed briefing to Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru. Akazawa, who is Japan's economic revitalization minister, met US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other officials on Thursday in Washington. The two sides agreed to hold the next round of ministerial talks in mid-May or later. Akazawa told reporters he strongly urged the United States to review the tariffs. He also said he wants to speed up negotiations and reach an agreement as early as next month. Ishiba said on Friday that the two sides have not found common ground. At the same time, he described the latest round of talks as "forward-looking" and "constructive." The Japanese government hopes to identify areas where the two sides can make concessions, so a deal can be reached that suits both countries.
