Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the fighting in Ukraine will stop only when Ukrainian troops withdraw from "the territories they occupy." He added that if they do not leave, Russia will achieve that by military force. Putin's remarks came at a news conference in Kyrgyzstan, as he was commenting on a peace plan that was discussed by US and Ukrainian officials in Geneva on Sunday. Putin said the plan "could form the basis for future agreements." He said Russia sees that Washington is taking Moscow's position into account in some areas. In an apparent reference to the fact that Ukraine did not hold a presidential election scheduled for last year, Putin said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had lost his legitimate status. Putin added that signing documents with the Ukrainian leadership is pointless. Quiz 1: What was Vladimir Putin's position on the ongoing fighting in Ukraine, according to the article? A.
