European Union leaders have agreed to step up sanctions against Iran. The move is in response to the country's large-scale attack against Israel on Saturday.

The agreement came at a summit meeting held in Brussels on Wednesday.

European Council President Charles Michel told reporters that the sanctions will target companies involved in the production of drones and missiles. He said the addition of sanctions is a clear signal that the EU wants to send.

Michel added that the EU wants to do everything it can to protect civilians.

In a statement released after the meeting, the Council urged "all parties to exercise the utmost restraint and to refrain from any action that may increase tensions in the region."

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden wrote an opinion piece on Israel and Ukraine for the Wall Street Journal published on Wednesday.

In his article, he said, "The government of Iran wants to destroy Israel forever -- wiping the world's only Jewish state off the map."

He added that "if Iran succeeds in significantly escalating its assault on Israel, the US could be drawn in."

He urged Congress to quickly pass spending measures to provide security assistance for Israel.
