Thailand's government is set to tighten restrictions on the use of cannabis. It was removed from the narcotics list last year in a bid to stimulate the economy. But the move prompted controversy when it opened the door to widespread recreational use. Lawmakers from the country's newly formed ruling coalition said on Wednesday that they submitted a bill to renew the cannabis policy. They said it will be discussed in the parliament. The bill aims to clarify that cannabis can only be used for medical and research purposes and that recreational use is prohibited. Thousands of shops selling marijuana sprang up nationwide after the former government legalized its sale and cultivation. But the boom triggered public concern, particularly about the drug's misuse by young people. The industry's market is expected to be worth up to 1.2 billion dollars over the next few years. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has also pledged to review the cannabis policy. His Pheu Thai Party promoted a hardline anti-narcotics campaign ahead of the May election.
