Lawmakers from ruling political parties in Japan and Taiwan have agreed to cooperate for peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait with China in mind, which is stepping up hegemonic actions.
Members of Japan's main governing Liberal Democratic Party and Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party held talks on their areas of expertise in diplomacy and defense in Tokyo on Wednesday.
It is the first such talks held between Japan and Taiwan after Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te took office in May.
An attendee from the LDP stressed the importance of cooperation between Japan and Taiwan as he says the security environment in East Asia is becoming increasingly severe.
A delegate from the DPP said in response that China's increasing military pressure in the East and South China seas, and the Taiwan Strait, is a serious issue for the security of Taiwan and Japan.
The two sides agreed to work together for peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait without allowing any unilateral attempt to change the status quo by force or intimidation.
They also confirmed that they will continue to exchange information to tackle cyberattacks.
