Moscow says Ukraine's drones attacked air force bases in Russia NHK

Russia's defense ministry says Ukrainian military drones attacked air force bases in Russia.

Russia's state-run news agency reported on Tuesday that there was a fire at an airfield in the western region of Kursk, which borders Ukraine. The governor of Kursk said an oil storage tank near the airfield was the target of a drone attack.

Explosions were reported on Monday at two airbases in the central and southern regions of Russia. The country's defense ministry claimed that three people were killed in Ukrainian drone attacks that targeted Russia's military aircraft.

Independent media outlets in Russia reported that two Tupolev-95 strategic bombers were damaged in an attack on the Engels airbase in Saratov.
Ukraine has not issued official announcements regarding the attacks.

The US newspaper, The New York Times, said on Tuesday that a Ukrainian official admitted that Ukrainian drones attacked the airbases. The newspaper said they were the deepest attacks inside Russia, since the invasion of Ukraine began.

The British defense ministry said the Engels airbase is home to more than 30 heavy bombers. The ministry also said it is the main operating base of Russia's long-range aviation forces. The ministry added that these aircraft contribute to Russia's nuclear deterrence. It noted that they have been used to launch cruise missiles at Ukraine. The ministry said the airbase is more than 600 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory.

The ministry said the cause of the explosions has not been confirmed. The ministry also said that Russia will probably consider the attacks to be some of the most strategically significant failures of its military, since the invasion of Ukraine began, if it determines that Ukraine attacked the airbases.

The ministry said the Russian military will probably try to impose severe sanctions on officers it deems to be responsible for allowing the assaults to occur.

A US think tank, the Institute for the Study of War, said Ukrainian forces likely conducted strikes on two Russian strategic airbases on Monday. It said that the attacks demonstrated Ukraine's ability to disrupt Russia's strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure.

The think tank said that "Russian milbloggers" criticized Russian officials for failing to prevent the drone strikes.
