US President Joe Biden has called on Moscow to release a journalist for the Wall Street Journal who was detained by Russian authorities on suspicion of espionage. Biden urged the release of US national Evan Gershkovich when speaking with reporters at the White House on Friday. When asked if he intended to expel Russian diplomats and journalists, he said there were no plans right now to do so. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters the State Department is actively working to secure consular access to Gershkovich. Meanwhile, Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Friday that consular access will be provided in accordance with procedures. She claimed Gershkovich was trying to obtain classified information using his credentials as a reporter. Russian newspaper editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021, told Reuters news agency that he knows Gershkovich and does not believe the reporter is a spy. Muratov said he hopes Gershkovich will be freed soon.
