Japan's stock benchmark fell by the most this year on Friday after US President Donald Trump's latest comments on trade tariffs. The Nikkei 225 dropped to 37,155, down about 2.9 percent from the previous day. Investors pushed share prices lower in a wide range of sectors. The index briefly fell below 37,000 for the first time in about five-and-a-half months. The slump came after Trump announced that he plans to impose higher tariffs on imports from China starting on Tuesday. He also said 25 percent levies on Mexican and Canadian goods will also begin the same day. Investors worried that uncertainties in Trump's tariff policy could cast a shadow over the global economy. Other benchmark stock indices in Asia such as Seoul's KOSPI and Hong Kong's Hang Seng also dropped sharply.
