Biden hopes to meet Xi in fall NHK

US President Joe Biden says he hopes to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping this fall.

Biden was speaking at a news conference on Friday following a trilateral summit with the leaders of Japan and South Korea near Washington.

Biden said, "I expect and hope to follow up on our conversation on Bali this fall." Biden and Xi met before the Group of 20 summit on the Indonesian island last November.

Another meeting between the two leaders could take place on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi in September or the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders' Meeting in San Francisco in November.

Biden has said the United States wants competition with China, not conflict. At the trilateral summit with Japan and South Korea, Biden stressed that the three countries would work closely together in dealing with economic coercion.

Biden has also stated the importance of dialogue to prevent accidental clashes turning into conflict. He apparently hopes talks with Xi will stabilize US-China relations.
