Black smoke rises from Sistine chimney, marking inconclusive papal vote NHK

Black smoke has risen from the chimney of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel, indicating that cardinals have yet to elect a new pope.

A conclave to elect a new pontiff for the Roman Catholic Church is ongoing at the chapel.

Cardinal electors were locked inside it at around 5:45 p.m. local time on Wednesday.

More than three hours later, the emergence of black smoke from the chimney signaled that the first round of voting was inconclusive.

The second round of voting will take place Thursday morning, local time.
