ASEAN foreign ministers at the meeting in Indonesia are struggling to hammer out a joint communique, as some members are discontent with Thailand's approach to Myanmar's situation. Foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations had held their meeting in Jakarta through Wednesday. During the meeting, Thai foreign minister Don Pramudwinai revealed that he visited Myanmar on July 9 and met Myanmar's ousted de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under detention. The Thai government has apparently utilized its connection with Myanmar's military to set up the meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi. Diplomatic sources say Thailand is pushing for the communique to refer to its foreign minister's visit to Myanmar as an achievement that could lead to a resolution to the internal conflict in the country. Some member countries, including Indonesia, the current chair of the organization, Malaysia and Singapore, are dissatisfied that Thailand was acting alone on Myanmar outside of ASEAN's framework. The attention is focused on the implementation of the "Five-Point Consensus" on Myanmar. The plan, agreed in 2021 by ASEAN members in the presence of Myanmar's military leader, calls for an immediate end to the violence in the country.
