North Korean leader Kim attends ceremony for launching new-type destroyer NHK

North Korean state-run television reported the launch of a new-type of destroyer in a ceremony attended by the country's leader Kim Jong Un.

The broadcaster on Saturday showed Kim participating in the event at a dockyard in the western city of Nampho on Friday. The day also marked a military anniversary.

The vessel is reportedly a 5,000-ton destroyer. Kim said in a speech it will have supersonic strategic cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles.

Footage shows radar, air defense and vertical launch systems on the destroyer.

South Korean media quoted an expert as saying there are 74 cells of vertical launch systems for missiles.

South Korean media also reported speculation that the destroyer could be equipped with missiles carrying nuclear warheads.

Kim expressed his desire to launch a fleet that operates far offshore, saying such capability is necessary to stop enemy reinforcements in an emergency on the Korean Peninsula.

He also stated that his country will proceed with building nuclear-powered submarines, one of the goals in its five-year national defense plan.
