Japanese pitcher Fujinami Shintaro of the Oakland Athletics made a bitter major league debut against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday. He faced two-way star Ohtani Shohei, a rival from his days in high school baseball.

Fujinami started the team's second game of the regular season at home. He moved to the Athletics from the Hanshin Tigers in Japan.

Fujinami and Ohtani were in the same year in high school and their face-offs excited many fans.

Fujinami got off to a good start with his splitters. He forced Ohtani to ground out in the first inning after striking out two batters in a row.

However, in the third, Fujinami got into trouble with his control. He gave up two runs, allowing the Angels to open the scoring.

With bases loaded and no outs, Ohtani hit a single to score his first RBI of the season.

Fujinami surrendered more runs. He left the mound before the end of the third inning to become the losing pitcher.

Ohtani made another hit in the sixth and finished the game with two hits and two RBIs.

Fujinami said it was a frustrating debut for him, but he will reflect on his pitching and make up for the loss.

Ohtani said it was good his team was able to create a big inning at the right time.

The Angels beat the Athletics 13-1 to earn its first win of the season.
