South Korea starts large-scale field training, partly with US NHK

South Korea's military has started an annual large-scale military exercise, part of which will be joined by the US military.

The field training exercise began on Monday morning and will continue through November 22.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the exercise will involve simulations of various threats posed by North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, as well as practical training.

It also said the training is expected to boost the operational capabilities of South Korean and US forces.

Some South Korean media reported on Monday that a US strategic bomber B-52 will be dispatched to South Korea later this week. They said it will be the first time for the B-52 Stratofortress to land at a South Korean air base.

In a show of solidarity between the US and South Korean armed forces, the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan is making a five-day port call at the South Korean port of Busan through Monday.

The series of moves are drawing strong opposition from North Korea.
