Canada's ruling Liberal Party is set to win a general election, which will allow its leader and prime minister, Mark Carney, to focus on tackling tariffs and other threats from the US.
The vote took place on Monday. Canada's public broadcaster CBC reported at night that the Liberal Party had won more than 160 out of 343 seats allocated to each electoral district. This made it the leading force in the House of Commons.
The major campaign issue was how to face up to the US administration led by President Donald Trump. Relations between the two countries have deteriorated following Trump's announcement of high tariffs and his comment suggesting that Canada should become the US' 51st state.
Carney took office in March by replacing former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The largest opposition Conservative Party had held Trudeau responsible for the country's economic deterioration.
The new prime minister is believed to have gained public support due to his experience as the governor of the central banks of both Canada and England. People also seem to support his hardline stance against the US, such as the retaliatory tariff measures.
Carney and Trump have agreed to begin tariff talks after the election.
Carney declared victory on Tuesday, saying, "When I sit down with President Trump, it will be to discuss the future economic and security relationship between two sovereign nations."
He also stressed his stance not to compromise by saying, "It will be with our full knowledge that we have many, many other options than the United States to build prosperity for all Canadians."
