Putin thanks Russian troops for stopping 'civil war' NHK

Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised his security forces for dealing with an armed rebellion led by Wagner mercenaries and their leader Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Putin addressed his troops directly on the steps of Cathedral Square inside the Kremlin walls.

He said Russian troops defended the constitutional order, lives, security and freedom of the country's citizens, and saved motherland from upheavals and effectively stopped a civil war.

He also called for a minute of silence for the pilots who were killed by the Wagner mercenaries during the weekend clashes.

Meanwhile, an independent Belarusian monitoring group says an aircraft reportedly linked to Prigozhin landed near the capital Minsk on Tuesday morning. It's not clear whether he is on board.

Prigozhin has not been seen in public since his fighters withdrew from the march on Moscow.

Kremlin officials said he would be exiled to Belarus, where camps for Wagner members are reportedly being constructed.

Russian authorities say they have closed the investigation against Prigozhin.

Russia's defense ministry says preparations are underway to transfer military vehicles, artillery and other weapons from the Wagner Group to Russian troops.
