Japan's top government spokesperson says Prime Minister Kishida Fumio will visit the United States from August 17 for a trilateral summit with the US and South Korea scheduled the next day. Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu officially announced Kishida's US visit in a news conference on Monday. Matsuno said Kishida will have talks with US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on August 18 at the Camp David presidential retreat near Washington. The three are expected to discuss ways to deal with North Korea, which has been pushing its nuclear and missile development programs. The leaders will also discuss how to strengthen cooperation to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific, as China has been increasing its maritime activities in the region. Matsuno said that they will exchange opinions on how to deal with North Korea and strengthen strategic coordination among Japan, the US and South Korea to maintain and strengthen a free and open international order based on the rule of law.
