A US Navy warship has made a port call in Cambodia. The first such visit in eight years comes at a time when China is cementing influence in the country, which it counts as one of its closest allies in the region.
                
The USS Savannah docked in the southern port of Sihanoukville on Monday. Cambodia&#039;s defense ministry says the visit -- made at America&#039;s request -- is aimed at strengthening friendship and promoting cooperation between the two countries.
                
Their ties have been frosty lately as China has been pouring money into infrastructure development in Cambodia. One of the projects is Ream Naval Base, near Sihanoukville.
                
Washington is concerned that the base within reach of the South China Sea is being developed into a new strategic outpost for the Chinese navy.
                
Another source of tension is US allegations of human rights violations and political oppression by the Cambodian government.
                
During the Savannah&#039;s five-day visit, members of its crew of around 100 will meet officials of the Ream base.
                
With China hawk Donald Trump set to return to the White House next month, Cambodia appears to see the event as a chance to mend fences with the US.
