One week after a deadly Halloween crowd crush in Seoul, people are calling for a review of the police response that led to the "inadequate" crowd control. The annual festivities in the popular Itaewon nightlife district turned deadly on October 29 after tens of thousands of young revelers crowded into narrow streets and alleyways. The disaster killed 156 people. South Korea's Yonhap News Agency says the country's National Police Agency was first notified about the crowd crush by fire department officials and not by their own local police stations. Meanwhile, the approval rating of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol stood at 29 percent, down one percentage point from the previous week. Gallup Korea released the result of a poll conducted over three days through Thursday. Sixty-three percent of the respondents said they disapprove of him, up one percentage point. Interior and Safety Minister Lee Sang-min drew criticism and was later forced to apologize after he said the tragedy could not have been prevented even if police and firefighters had been deployed in advance. Gallup Korea points out that the government's response at the time to the 2014 Sewol ferry accident that killed 299 people had a significant impact on its approval rating. Apparently wary of public opinion, President Yoon has emphasized that his administration is treating the accident as a top priority.
