Trump orders building of American Iron Dome missile defense shield NHK

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to introduce a new anti-missile system, called American Iron Dome, to defend the US homeland.

It is one of four defense-related executive orders Trump signed aboard Air Force One on his way from Florida to Washington on Monday.

Trump calls the planned missile interceptor shield America's version of Israel's Iron Dome air defense system.

In explaining the purpose of the plan, the order says "the threat of attack by ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles, and other advanced aerial attacks, remains the most catastrophic threat facing the United States."

The order, however, does not specify when the defense system is to be constructed.

Trump talked about the anti-missile shield in an address in Florida on Sunday. He said "everything will be made right here in the USA, 100 percent."

The project appears to be aimed at strengthening national defense and invigorating the US defense industry.
