The coldest day of the season hit Japan on Tuesday, with sub-zero temperatures observed in the north. The Meteorological Agency says a combination of a winter pressure pattern and a strong cold air mass brought freezing conditions to the country. Northern Japan saw temperatures plunge below freezing. Overnight lows were minus 10.4 degrees Celsius in Hokkaido's village of Shimukappu and minus 3 in the city of Sapporo, while the city of Aomori recorded minus 1.3 degrees. As of 6 a.m., temperatures remained below 10 degrees Celsius in many parts of the country, with 7.4 degrees observed in the city of Nagoya, 8 degrees in central Tokyo and 8.1 degrees in Osaka and Hiroshima cities. The daytime highs are expected to remain chilly, with 15 degrees forecast for Fukuoka, 14 in Osaka, 13 degrees in central Tokyo, 9 in Sendai and 4 degrees in Sapporo. The frigid conditions are expected to continue into Wednesday. There is a chance of heavy snowfall in northern Japan's mountainous areas on Tuesday morning. Officials are urging motorists to drive with extra care. They also warn that snow could also build up on electric wires.
