Health ministry confirms 12,163 new COVID cases in Tokyo NHK

Japan's health ministry says it confirmed 12,163 new cases of the coronavirus in Tokyo on Sunday. That's up 1,709 from a week ago.

The daily tally has marked a week-on-week increase for six straight days.

The ministry also confirmed 17 deaths in the capital.

The number of seriously ill patients who are on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines remained unchanged from Saturday at 15.

Nationwide, 119,174 new infections and 190 deaths were confirmed on Sunday.
