The head of the right-wing Brothers of Italy party, Giorgia Meloni, is set to be sworn in as the first female prime minister of the country. An alliance made up mainly of right-wing parties, including Brothers of Italy, secured a majority of seats in both houses of the parliament in the September 25 vote. Meloni met with President Sergio Mattarella in Rome on Friday. She announced her Cabinet lineup after being named as the new prime minister. Her coalition includes former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini's League party and former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party. Berlusconi is known for his friendly relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Salvini has been critical of EU sanctions against Russia over the invasion of Ukraine. Meloni has stressed that she is pro-NATO and pro-Europe.
