The South Korean military says it has retrieved a part of the wreckage of a fallen North Korean rocket in the Yellow Sea, west of the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea launched its first military reconnaissance satellite, Malligyong-1, on a Chollima-1 rocket on May 31. Pyongyang later announced that the rocket crashed into the Yellow Sea due to engine failure.

The South Korean military says it raised the part at 8:50 p.m. on Thursday.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported on Friday that the cylinder-shaped wreckage is about 12 meters long with a diameter of 2 to 3 meters. The wreckage is thought to be the second stage of the three-stage rocket.
One of the images released by the military showed the wreckage with Korean letters and a drawing that the agency said was of a flying horse.

South Korea has already retrieved other parts of the wreckage. It plans to work with the United States to study the rocket's performance and whether it was made with foreign products.

The South Korean military also says it will continue its search for other parts of the rocket.
