Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has struck a defiant stance on her impeachment, hinting her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, could join her defense team.

Duterte spoke to reporters for the first time since lawmakers voted Wednesday to indict her on a raft of charges.

She said she's been preparing for impeachment for over a year, and her father could help her fight the case "if he wants to."

If she's convicted and removed from her post in the Senate trial starting in June, she'll be barred from running in the next presidential election, in 2028.

She's accused of culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, bribery, betrayal of public trust and other high crimes. She denies any wrongdoing.

Sara Duterte was President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s running mate in the election three years ago. But their alliance imploded last year.

The impeachment complaints include her plotting to assassinate Marcos, his wife and the House speaker.

The president has kept himself at arm's length from the controversy, saying he has no role in the impeachment.
