Messi scores as Argentina reaches quarterfinals NHK

In the men's football World Cup, Argentina faced Australia on Saturday as the knockout stage got underway at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium near Doha.
Argentine superstar Lionel Messi led his team into the quarterfinals, scoring the first goal in a 2-1 win.

Messi put his team ahead in the 35th minute with a shot through the legs of an Australian defender and into the lower left corner of the net.

It was Messi's 1,000th professional match since his debut at Barcelona in 2004 and it was his ninth goal in 23 World Cup games.
Argentina added another through Julian Alvarez in the 57th minute.
