Top-division sumo rookie Takerufuji achieves historic win NHK

Takerufuji has become the first top-division rookie to win a sumo tournament in 110 years.

Takerufuji faced off against Gonoyama on the final day of the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in Osaka. Takerufuji severely injured his right ankle the previous day and was taken to a hospital.

Takerufuji said, "I'm truly relieved to have been able to fight in the final day's match. I fought to the best of my ability, so that everyone would remember even a small bit of my performance."

The 24-year-old Takerufuji is known for his quick starts and pushing and grappling style.

The Makunouchi division debutant clinched his title with 13 wins and two losses.
