A UN humanitarian agency has renewed a call for an immediate ceasefire to the fighting in the Gaza Strip, saying that a quarter of the population there is one step away from famine. An official from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, reported at the UN Security Council on Tuesday that the situation in the Palestinian enclave is critical. He said at least 576,000 people, one fourth of Gaza's more than 2 million inhabitants, are one step away from famine. The official said, if nothing is done, the UN agency fears that widespread famine in the territory is almost inevitable. The warning came as health authorities in Gaza say, as of Wednesday, the death toll from the conflict there has risen to 29,954. The Israeli military said on Wednesday that its ground and air forces conducted strikes on Khan Younis in southern Gaza and elsewhere over the past day. No signs have emerged for an agreement in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic group of Hamas over a pause in the fighting and the release of hostages held in Gaza. The ceasefire talks continue with go-betweens including Qatar, but there reportedly are still differences in the views of the two sides.
