North Korea to take part in Russia's Victory Day parade in May: Sources NHK

Multiple Russian sources say North Korea will take part in the Victory Day parade in Moscow in May. The event marks the former Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany.

The sources told NHK that the participation of the North Korean military in the World War Two victory ceremony on May 9 has already been decided.

They say they expect tens of North Korean personnel will take part.

Other diplomatic sources say a North Korean military band will take part in a music event in the Russian capital in late August.

The sources note that the North Korean military would be participating in these events for the first time.

On Wednesday, Russian defense minister Andrei Belousov said that military units from 19 friendly countries have been invited to the Victory Day parade.

He said 10 of them have already confirmed their participation, but did not mention the names of the countries.

Russia and North Korea have signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty. The pact calls for mutual military assistance if either nation is attacked.

The two countries have been strengthening military cooperation. Pyongyang has dispatched soldiers to Russia as Moscow continues its invasion of Ukraine.
