Investigators also raided the residences of several of his former aids, and other locations. They seized about 38 million dollars' worth of cash and 16 kilograms of gold bars.
Ismail Sabri took office in 2021 after his predecessor, Muhyiddin Yassin, stepped down over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He handed over power to current leader Anwar Ibrahim after losing a general election in 2022. The defeat made him Malaysia's shortest serving prime minister.
