Chinese President Xi cements grip on power with third term NHK

Chinese President Xi Jinping was officially appointed by the Chinese Communist Party on Sunday to run the country for the next five years. Xi will serve an unprecedented third term as the party's General Secretary.

The party also announced the seven members of the powerful Politburo Standing Committee. On the top of the list is President Xi.

China's second-ranking official, Premier Li Keqiang, was among those removed from the top decision-making body.

Meanwhile, foreign media reports are focusing on an unusual situation involving former Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Video footage shows Hu seated next to Xi during the party's National Congress on Saturday, before he was suddenly escorted out. He appeared reluctant to leave and tried to return to his seat. The party has not commented on the incident.

Observers speculate that his exit could have been meant to send a political signal, or that Hu may have had a health issue.
