A recent survey showed that one in three workers in Japan currently has a side job or has had one in the past. More than half of them said the main benefit is extra income to cover living expenses. About 1,000 people participated in the online survey from the job placement firm CrowdWorks in September. Of them, 20 percent said they currently have second jobs, while 14 percent had them in the past. Japanese companies have long forbidden employees to have side jobs, but that has been changing in recent years. Many participants said they work at another company as a salesperson or a consultant, while others sell products online. Regarding additional income each month, only 13 percent said they get over 100,000 yen, or about 715 dollars, while 16 percent said they get less than that amount, but over 50,000 yen, or 357 dollars. The largest portion, at 65 percent, said they earn less than 357 dollars in an average month.
