Interior and security ministers of the Group of Seven nations have agreed to jointly tackle the international threat of organized fraud and the risks posed by generative AI. The ministers adopted a joint statement on Sunday to wrap up their three-day meeting in Mito City, north of Tokyo. One of the main topics of the gathering was cross-border organized fraud and the growing damage caused by such activities. In Britain, about 2.8 billion dollars was stolen through fraud in the financial year 2021/2022. That's 11 times the figure for Japan last year. In the United States, phone scams run by groups based in South Asia have resulted in about 966 million dollars in annual losses. The statement also pledged that governments will share the recognition that AI might be used for acts of terrorism or other crimes. It says they will promote information sharing to improve investigative abilities and strengthen cooperation with industrial circles. The ministers also agreed to urge social media operators to take action to protect children from sexual exploitation, including child pornography. As for economic security, they agreed to work closely to prevent leaks of information and cutting-edge technology by government organizations and companies.
