Yemen's Houthi anti-government group has claimed responsibility for an attack on a Norway-flagged tanker off the country's coast on Monday. The US military's Central Command said the tanker, STRINDA, was attacked with what appeared to be a cruise missile at around 4 p.m. Monday EST, while passing through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. The command said the projectile was likely launched from a Houthi-controlled area in Yemen. It added that a fire erupted on the tanker, but that no casualties have been reported. Reuters news agency and others have reported that the tanker was headed north toward the Suez Canal. A spokesperson for the Houthis said in an online video later that they carried out a military operation against the Norwegian tanker. The official also said the group will continue to try to block all ships heading for Israeli ports until aid supplies are allowed into the Gaza Strip. The Yemeni group condemns Israel for its military operations in Gaza. The Houthis claimed they attacked two Israeli ships on December 3. Those attacks have raised concern over the safe navigation in nearby waters.
