Over 480,000 people have been forced to evacuate two days after a powerful typhoon hit the central Philippines, causing widespread destruction and flooding. The national disaster agency says at least 31 people were killed when Typhoon Rai hit the country's second largest city, Cebu, on Friday. The military released aerial footage of Siargao Island that shows the extent of the damage. About 3,700 homes were destroyed or flooded. The military says the death toll and the number of damaged homes could rise as there are more than 20 municipalities the military hasn't been able to contact, including those on remote islands. The government is planning to dispatch military aircraft to those islands to rescue people who are waiting on the roofs of buildings and homes, and to provide support for the evacuees.
