Tokyo reports 79 new cases of coronavirus NHK

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirmed 79 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday.

The figure is up 41 from a week ago, and topped 70 for two days in a row.

The increase from a week earlier has continued for 15 straight days.

The seven-day average of the daily tallies rose to 60.1, up 78 percent from a week ago.

Nationwide, authorities confirmed 535 new infections as of 9 p.m. on Saturday.

No deaths from COVID-19 were reported.

Meanwhile, Okinawa's prefectural government says the US military reported a record 235 new infections among its personnel based in the prefecture on Saturday.

The figure reported on Friday was 98.

Prefectural officials are calling on those working at US military bases to get tested.
