Coronavirus cases soar in Europe NHK

A number of European nations reported new highs in their daily count of coronavirus cases on New Year's Eve.

France confirmed 232,200 new infections on Friday, up more than 25,000 from the previous day.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in a televised speech that the challenge of containing the virus will likely continue for the coming few weeks, and stressed the importance of vaccinations.

Britain reported 189,846 new cases, Italy's daily count was 144,243 and Greece's tally stood at 40,560. The figures are the highest ever in the three countries.

As the Omicron variant spreads, the pandemic shows no signs of subsiding at the start of New Year.
