Unidentified person crosses border into N.Korea NHK

South Korea's military says an unidentified person crossed the military demarcation line from northeastern Gangwon Province into North Korea on Saturday night.

Joint Chiefs of Staff officers say the person was spotted near the demarcation line around 9:20 p.m. and was seen crossing it about one hour and 20 minutes later, despite efforts to capture the person.

Surveillance equipment installed at an outpost had earlier recorded the person breaking through the barbed-wire fence. The military said its response was insufficient.

The person is believed to be South Korean.

In September 2020, the North fatally shot a South Korean fisheries official in its waters.

South Korea said it sent a message to North Korea to ensure the safety of the person who crossed the border on Saturday. It said the safety of the person has not been confirmed, but no irregular movements have been monitored on the northern side of the border.
