New cases of coronavirus in Japan top 8,000 NHK

Japanese health officials say they had confirmed 8,249 new cases of the coronavirus nationwide as of 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Officials in Osaka Prefecture reported one death.

The southwestern prefecture of Okinawa confirmed 1,533 new infections on Sunday -- the second highest daily tally for the prefecture. A record 1,759 cases had been reported the previous day.

Okinawa officials say US military bases in the prefecture confirmed 429 new infections on Sunday.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 1,223 new cases in the capital on Sunday.

The daily tally is about 14 times higher than a week ago. The figure has topped 1,000 for the second day in a row.
