The daily number of coronavirus infections in Japan has topped 13,000. Officials confirmed more than 10,000 infections in the country on Wednesday for the first time since September 9. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirmed 2,198 new cases of coronavirus infection in the capital on Wednesday. The daily tally more than doubled from the previous day and rose more than five-fold from a week ago. The figure exceeded 2,000 for the first time since September 4. Tokyo officials said the number of patients in serious condition was four, unchanged from Tuesday. Officials of the western prefecture of Osaka said 1,711 new cases were confirmed on Wednesday. It's the first time since September 15 for the daily tally in the prefecture to top 1,000. Osaka officials said six people were in serious condition, up one from Tuesday. They also reported one new death from the virus. Meanwhile, the three prefectures -- Okinawa, Hiroshima and Yamaguchi -- where quasi-emergency restrictions were put in place from Sunday also confirmed many new infections on Wednesday. Okinawa reported 1,644 cases, the second-highest daily figure for the southwestern prefecture. It had a record 1,759 cases on Saturday. The US military told Okinawa officials that it confirmed 295 new infections on its facilities in the prefecture. The western prefecture of Hiroshima confirmed 652 new infections. Neighboring Yamaguchi Prefecture, which hosts a US military base, reported 182 new cases. The daily tally in Yamaguchi was the highest ever, surpassing the previous record of 181 marked last Thursday. The US military reported 34 new infections at the Iwakuni Air Station in Yamaguchi on Wednesday.
