Cambodia announced on Wednesday that a meeting of foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations scheduled for next week will be postponed. Observers say differences among ASEAN members over the Myanmar issue may be behind the delay. The in-person meeting was scheduled to take place in Siem Reap, northern Cambodia, next Tuesday and Wednesday. Cambodia, ASEAN's rotating chair this year, says it is difficult for many foreign ministers from member countries to travel to the country. No new schedule for the meeting was announced. Since the coup in Myanmar, ASEAN member countries have refused to invite Myanmar's military leader to the group's summit meetings amid the junta's continuing crackdown on civilian protesters. But Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed an intention to hold meetings of all member countries. He visited Myanmar last Friday to meet with the country's military leader. Some other ASEAN members expressed concerns that the military leader's participation may lead to recognition of the regime.
