The Japan Meteorological Agency stressed that people living in areas subject to tsunami alerts should be vigilant before they are lifted.
Miyaoka Kazuki, an official of the agency, held a news conference about the situation on Sunday.
Miyaoka said, "Some damage may occur in areas where tsunami warnings are issued. Please stay in safer places including higher ground or high buildings as tsunami will likely hit coastal areas repeatedly. And please keep out of coastal areas where tsunami advisories are issued because tides flow faster than usual."
The official said the impact is going to be felt for a long time. Tsunami are usually generated by earthquakes.
But this one occurred after a volcanic eruption.
Miyaoka said the agency does not know at this time how the tsunami was generated. He also said the agency does not know when the alerts will be lifted.
