Police in Peru say two people have died after being swept away by high waves believed to have been caused by Saturday's huge volcanic eruption in the South Pacific nation of Tonga. Police say the two women had been visiting a beach in the northern region of Lambayeque on Saturday. A tsunami warning was not in place in the South American country at the time. But the Peruvian Navy was urging that ports and beaches be closed temporarily as a precautionary measure. Authorities in neighboring Chile and Ecuador issued tsunami alerts, calling on people to stay vigilant. Those alerts had been lifted by Sunday morning.
