Japan SDF members dismissed over alleged indecent acts against female colleagues NHK

Two members of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force have been dismissed for allegedly engaging in indecent acts against two female colleagues.

The two men, a sergeant in his 30s and a 21-year-old leading private, were discharged on Friday. They worked at the GSDF's Camp Nerima in Tokyo.

Officials at the camp say the men engaged in indecent acts, including persistently touching the bodies of two female members in a tent where they were staying after training back in February 2021.

An investigation was launched after one of the female members reported it to her unit.

The male members were quoted as saying they could not recall the incident because they were drunk but expressed deep remorse for their actions.

The GSDF unit says it will raise awareness against harassment among its members to prevent a recurrence.

A former GSDF member, Gonoi Rina, drew international attention after going public about the sexual abuse she suffered from her male colleagues. Three of them were found guilty of indecent assault earlier this week.

Gonoi was included on the BBC's annual list of 100 women for 2023.
