US troops on alert over Ukraine NHK

Commanders at the Pentagon are growing increasingly worried that Russia could invade Ukraine. They have put 8,500 troops on "heightened alert."

The Pentagon Press Secretary said the US has a commitment to provide forces to NATO. John Kirby said they can be deployed, if needed.

President Joe Biden met with European leaders to coordinate a response. He spoke online with the leaders of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, the European Commission, and NATO.

About 100,000 Russian soldiers have gathered along the Ukrainian border. Their leaders have seen Ukraine grow closer to the West. They want guarantees that the country will not join the alliance.

European Union foreign ministers also discussed the situation. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said they are doing their best on the diplomatic front. But he said, if that should fail, they are prepared to respond.

US officials have ordered the families of American diplomats to leave Ukraine. British officials are withdrawing some staff from their embassy. But EU officials have decided not to pull anyone out, for now.
